Petra was lost for hundreds of years and rediscovered in 1812. The site was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985 when it was described as “one of the most precious cultural properties of man’s cultural heritage.” The temples and caves of Petra with its huge white rocks forming the gate and the narrow entrance which towers over 21m high rest up on the slope of Mount Hor. The Arabic name of Petra is Wadi Musa – or the Valley of Moses.  Aron’s (brother of Moses) shrine is located at Petra on the hill top.

Wadi Rum is a spectacular dessert valley cut into the sandstone and granite rock in southwest Jordan. It is the largest wadi (valley) in Jordan. The name Rum most likely comes from an Aramaic root meaning ‘high’ or ‘elevated’.

In the West, Wadi Rum may be best known for its connection with British officer T. E. Lawrence, who based his operations here during the Arab Revolt of 1917–18. In the 1980s one of the impressive rock formations in Wadi Rum was named “The Seven Pillars of Wisdom” in memory of Lawrence’s book penned in the aftermath of the war, though the ‘Seven Pillars’ referred to in the book actually have no connection with Rum

Jordan is a country bordering Israel. Jordan does not have any oil but, what it lacks in natural resources it makes up greatly in terms of rich archeological ruins which is spread all over the land.  Most of them are pre Islamic and reflects a mixed influence of Egypt, Sumer and Roman who came at a later date. Petra is one place in Jordan currently in the list of the seven new wonders as also an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
